The
town of Tavistock, voted 'England's best market town' (The
Campaign for the Protection of Rural England) is situated on the
River Tavy below the slopes of Dartmoor National Park. It is a delight
to wander around with small specialist shops including the 1000
year old Crebers delicatessen and multi award-winning Country Cheeses.
The town also boasts a thriving market scene with a farmers market
twice a month and a regular covered pannier market which dates back
to 1105. In the heart of the town a beautiful 15th-century parish
church can be found near the 12th-century ruins of the Benedictine
abbey. Reputed to be the birthplace of Sir Francis Drake, his statue
within the town is the original of the replica to be found on Plymouth
Hoe.
World
famous for its stunning scenery, the Dartmoor National Park is
best known for its rocky outcrops, woodlands and wild open stretches
of moorland. With over 200 grantite 'tors' to visit you are
spoilt for choice. Especially popular is Hound Tor at Grimspound
- the setting for Arthur Conan Doyle's 'Hound of the Baskervilles'.
Other attractions to visit within easy reach include Buckland Abbey,
home of Sir Francis Drake, Widecombe-in-the-Moor of 'Uncle Tom Cobley'
fame, Becky Falls and Buckfast Abbey, a working Benedictine Monastery.
No visit to the area would be complete without a trip to Plymouth,
home to the Hoe where Drake first sighted the Spanish Armada whilst
he played bowls and from where the Mayflower sailed for America
with the pilgrim fathers. Also within easy reach of the hotel are
the coastal resorts of South Devon. Torquay, Paignton and Brixham
are famous for their exotic plants as well as lovely sandy beaches.
