Europe's
largest city with a population of around 7 million, London is also
one of Europe's most exciting and interesting cities. Its museums
and galleries are among the finest in the world including the National
Gallery, with a renowned collection featuring great artists such
as Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens, Cezanne, Gainsborough and Stubbs
and the Tate Modern, Britain's national museum of Modern Art. Housed
in the former Bankside Power Station, on the banks of the River
Thames, the gallery displays the world famous Tate collection of
international modern and contemporary art, including major works
by Matisse, Picasso and Rothko. London's
best museums include the British Museum, with around 4 million artefacts
from all over the world, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the great
museum of art and design with displays of furniture, silver, glass,
fashion and textiles, the Natural History Museum and the Science
Museum. The city is also home to magnificent castles and palaces
such as the Tower of London, housing the Crown Jewels, Hampton Court
Palace in beautiful gardens beside the Thames and the Banqueting
House in Whitehall. Guided tours of the city can be enjoyed by double-decker
bus, with hop-on, hop-off tickets while river cruises with commentary
run up and down the Thames ferrying passengers between historic
sites.
London also
offers excellent shopping from world-famous Harrods and Harvey Nichols
in Knightsbridge to the buzzing markets of Covent Garden, Camden
Lock and Portobello Road. The city's parks such as Hyde Park offer
quiet spaces for relaxing or perhaps boating on the Serpentine while
garden lovers will enjoy a visit to the Royal Botanic Gardens at
Kew, a world heritage site located in 121 hectares of stunning vistas
and 6 magnificent glasshouses set in a beautiful landscape beside
the river Thames between Richmond and Kew in south-west London.
The capital
is also renowned for its nightlife, with pubs and clubs, comedy,
dance and excellent theatre ranging from popular West End musicals
to classic Shakespeare at the reconstructed Globe Theatre on London's
Bankside. Eating out is a real pleasure in the city with a huge
variety of cuisine ranging from Chinese and Indian to Thai and Italian,
while many pubs now offer a high standard of traditional English
food.
