One
of Britain's most beautiful cities, Bath joined the ranks of Rome
and Florence when it was designated a World Heritage City in 1987.
Originally founded by the Romans when they discovered the hot springs,
the city became truly fashionable again in the Georgian era. Virtually
the whole town is filled with elegant buildings created by architect
John Wood and John Wood the Younger. Bath's most famous landmarks
include the Royal Crescent and Circus, Pulteney Bridge, Great Pulteney
Street, the Roman Baths and Pump Room.
Also immortalised in the novels of Jane Austen, who lived here in
the 19th century, her life and works can be discovered in the Jane
Austen Centre. Visitors can follow in her footsteps on a walking
tour, which depart from the Centre three days a week.
A wealth of interesting museums, quality shopping, flower-filled
gardens and al-fresco cafes add to the attraction of this beautiful
city, most of which are within walking distance from the centre.
